Supercars, fast and noisy cars and motorbikes. Nickie Aiken, Member of Parliament for the Cities of London & Westminster, hears too often from local people across the constituency about the plague many cause in neighbourhoods. The loud and often screeching noise they create as they race one another up and down central London’s roads with their loud and vibrating exhausts, or revving their engines late into the night. It cannot go on.
This summer, Grant Shapps MP, Secretary of State for Transport, has launched a trial for noise cameras to crack down on this anti-social behaviour. The trial will look to see whether the latest noise cameras can be used as an effective tool for future enforcement and explore the opportunities that innovative new technology can provide in cracking down on drivers flouting the law.
Nickie is under no illusion that noise cameras work. Having seen, and heard, the difference that noise cameras have made on notorious spots for “car meets”, Waterloo Place and Exhibition Road, Nickie is calling on the Secretary of State to include roads in the Two Cities as part of the trial. Nickie is listening to local people who tell her they just want peace and quiet on their roads, especially at night.
Nickie explained,
“Across the Two Cities, I am constantly hearing from local people, councillors, and resident societies about the excessive noise of supercars and motorbikes. They’re a plague on our roads. Supercars and noisy motorbikes create a screeching noise, revving their engines well into the night, giving no thought for others, many of whom are trying to sleep.
“The trial this summer is welcome news, and I hope to have many more of them. But if you’re affected by this issue, share your experience with me. I want to show the Secretary of State why this trial is important, and build the case to include roads across our neighbourhoods in the trial.”
Tell Nickie if you’re affected by these nuisance vehicles so that she can make your voice heard in the heart of Government. Share your road name below, and if you have any videos, or evidence of the impact of supercars, email it to Nickie at [email protected]
