Member of Parliament for the Cities of London & Westminster Nickie Aiken visited volunteers preparing for this year’s Silver Sunday earlier this week.
Silver Sunday, which is held on the first Sunday of October since 2012, celebrates the contributions of older people to society and aims to tackle loneliness among older people. It’s acknowledged to be the UK’s national day for older people with events held to celebrate it across the country. Last year over 1,200 free events took place across the UK.
The volunteers in Pimlico that Nickie visited have this year have put together 1,000 tea boxes for lonely elderly residents, led by Silver Sunday founder and Westminster City Councillor Christabel Flight. You can watch Nickie chatting to Christabel about Silver Sunday above.
Christabel’s work for older people was acknowledged today by the Prime Minister who awarded her a UK Points of Light award, recognising her outstanding voluntary contribution to her community.
