In the last few weeks both Westminster City Council and the City of London Corporation have successfully sourced temporary accommodation for the vast majority of rough sleepers in both Cities. This has been done with the support of the government who have providing funding for accommodation.
While both authorities continue to work hard to house those remaining on the streets, it has not been confirmed who will foot the bill going forward.
In order to provide clarity, Nickie has written to Robert Jenrick, the Secretary of State for Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, asking him to confirm whether local authorities would continue to receive extra funding for temporary accommodation.
Having been the leader of Westminster City Council before becoming a Member of Parliament, Nickie is very aware of the pressure the cost of footing the bill could place on both local authorities. As Leader, she made tackling rough sleeping a priority, launching the Hidden Network Scheme. You can find out more about it here.
In the same letter, Nickie also asked him to confirm that plans are being put in place to support local authorities attempts to keep those currently in temporary accommodation off the streets permanently.
