Today marks a year since Nickie Aiken was first elected Member of Parliament for the Cities of London & Westminster. She was elected on 13th December last year.
Reflecting on her first year as a Member of Parliament Nickie said,
It has been an honour to represent the Two Cities in Parliament but 2020 has not been the year any of us imagined it would be. For many of us Covid-19 has made it possibly the most difficult year of our lives.
Young or old, we have all made huge sacrifices. My sincere condolences to you if you have lost someone close to you due to the pandemic or in any other circumstances. I know the restrictions has prevented many of not being able to be with those closest to us when they have passed away, which is unimaginable.
My team and I have been incredibly busy supporting individuals and businesses across the Two Cities. Most constituents contact me via email, and we have received and responded to over 11,000 emails. My team has resolved over 5,000 constituents’ cases. The very nature of the constituency has meant I have been approached by more small and medium sized businesses needing my help and support due to the fall out of the pandemic.
I began the year holding regular face to face surgeries, later switching to virtual surgeries to ensure people could still easily raise concerns and seek my help with issues. Please do get in touch with me if I can help you in any way.
I went into the election last year with a clear idea of the type of MP I wanted to be - a strong, local voice. I planned to be out and about as a highly visible local MP, holding regular street surgeries, knocking on doors and holding public meetings across the Two Cities. Listening to what matters to local people and taking action. Covid-19 has made this virtually impossible to do. Hence why I have undertaken more social media, posting regular videos on all my different platforms to report back on what I am doing on your behalf.
Next year, with vaccines starting to be rolled-out, I hope and expect to be much more visible across the Two Cities, in line with government guidance and of course as soon as it is safe to do so.
I hope that my second year as a Member of Parliament, with Covid-19 behind us, I will be able to continue to improve the lives of people across the Two Cities.
