King Charles III made his first King's Speech, outlining the Government’s agenda for the year ahead.
Nickie Aiken, Member of Parliament for the Cities of London & Westminster, stood in the House of Lords during his speech and heard first-hand the Government’s legislative programme as it takes long-term decisions to deliver a brighter future.
Over the next Parliamentary session, the Government plans to table 21 Bills, including:
The Criminal Justice Bill, ensuring defendants attend their sentencing hearings; tougher sentences for those who murder their partners at the end of a relationship, and will create a criminal offence of possession of a blade with the intent to cause harm.
The Leasehold and Freehold Bill, making it easier and cheaper for homeowners to extend their leases or buy their freehold.
The Renters Reform Bill which has been carried over from the last Parliament and sets out to abolish no-fault evictions known as section 21; strengthen the rights of landlords to evict problem tenants, and end the overall ban on having pets in rented homes.
Other bills include the Animal Welfare Live Exports Bill, the carried-over Holocaust Memorial Bill, the Economic Activity of Public Bodies (Overseas Matters) Bill, and a Digital Markets Bill.
And lastly, the Pedicabs (London) Bill. The Bill introduces our licensing scheme for pedicabs in London. The scheme will make pedicabs safer, mandate driver and vehicle checks, end the blaring music, and regulate fares so that no one is ripped off again with demands to pay hundreds of pounds for journeys less than a mile.
