This morning, Cities of London & Westminster MP Nickie Aiken appeared on Radio 4’s Today programme to discuss the impact of Covid-19 on businesses in the West End.
Responding to a question about why people are not returning to their offices in the UK as quickly as in other countries Nickie said, “I think the biggest issue for Londoners is confidence in public transport. The vast majority of people come into the West End and to the City of London by train, tube and bus. And there's been a huge fall off in confidence. We've got to get that back. We've got to get businesses, the Mayor of London and government to work together to provide that confidence, to get people back in.”
Earlier in the interview, Nickie warned that a consequence of not getting people back to work could be as many as 50,000 jobs in the retail sector across the West End.
