MP for the Cities of London & Westminster, Nickie Aiken, spoke out in Parliament during a debate on the Online Safety Bill.
The Online Safety Bill in its current form, puts in place a new duty of care to make companies take more responsibility for the safety of their users, as well as take action in respect of illegal and harmful content. However, Nickie believes the Bill must go further, and we should use this opportunity to include provisions that protect and keep us all safe whilst online from scams and fraudulent messages.
Nickie is pleased the Committee has included my calls to amend the current legislation, and prioritise prevention of online fraud.
It is not enough for providers to simply undertake a risk assessment for fraudulent content and take down this content when reported. To effectively combat online fraud, we need legislation that requires platform operators to be proactive in stopping fraudulent material in the first instance.
Closing her contribution to the debate, Nickie said,
"We need to protect our citizens against aggressive and malicious abuses of technology; it is now, or never."
