Did you know that the Port of London Authority collects over 200 tons worth of rubbish every year in the River Thames? That's what Nickie Aiken, Member of Parliament for the Cities of London and Westminster, learnt when she took to the Thames.
Nickie was delighted to meet Steven Clapperton, Director of Sustainable Marine Operations at the Port of London Authority, and his team and learn more about their work to clear up the Thames.
Following the visit, Nickie commented,
"I've just been out on the River Thames with the Port of London Authority. Fascinating visit talking about how much rubbish they collect from the Thames every year. Over 200 tons worth. And the clear message is to all of us, we've really got to protect our River, protect the wildlife and make sure that we don't throw away plastic bottles or anything else into the river.
"A particular problem, they told me, was wet wipes. So please don't flush wet wipes down the loo, put them in the bin and let us make sure that we protect our River and protect our wildlife."
